Health Literacy of Village Health Volunteers Regarding Dietary Control Based Upon Nutrition Therapy for Diabetic Mellitus Type II Patients

Abstract

 This analytical cross-sectional research aimed to study the dimension and level of Health Literacy and compare the Health Literacy of VHVs regarding dietary control based upon nutrition therapy for Diabetic Mellitus type II patients classified by demographic and environmental factors. The samples were 405 VHVs randomly selected by multi-stage sampling technique. The research tools were 2 questionnaires 1) demographic and environmental factors that the content validity (IOC) was 0.67-1 and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient ) was 0.81 2) Health Literacy of VHVs regarding dietary control based upon nutrition therapy for Diabetic Mellitus type II patients which the content validity (IOC) were 0.67-1, reliability (KR 20) was 0.55-0.84 and Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient was 0.66-0.98. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Independent T-test and F-test

The study revealed that Basic, Communicative, Critical, and overall Health Literacy level was at a low level. The demographic factors on different educational levels and occupations including environmental factors on the different frequency of health learning resulted in different Health Literacy significantly at p ≤ 0.05. The suggestion was to develop the program to enhance the Health Literacy of VHVs regarding dietary control based upon nutrition therapy for Diabetic Mellitus type II patients.
