The Effects of Health Literacy Enhancement Program on Health Literacy and Prevention Behavior of Hypertension among Community – Dwelling Older Adults

Abstract

This study was quasi-experimental research using a two group, pretest-posttest design. The purpose of this research aimed to investigate the effects of health literacy enhancement program on health literacy and hypertension control behavior among community-dwelling older adults. The study sample consisted of 60 older adults. The subjects with 30 of them being assigned into the experimental group and the other 30 into control group. The instruments used in this study were composed of the demographic characteristic interview protocol, the health literacy interview protocol (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient .93), the hypertension control behavior interview protocol (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient .89). Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test. The results revealed that the mean score of the health literacy of experimental group after participation the health literacy program was significantly higher than before participation with statistical significance (p < .001). the mean score of the hypertension control behavior of experimental group after participation the health literacy program was significantly higher than before participation with statistical significance (p < .001) the mean score of the health literacy of experimental group after participation the health literacy program was higher than the subject in the control group with statistical significance (p < .001) and the mean score of the hypertension control behavior of experimental group after participation the health literacy program was higher than the subject in the control group with statistical significance (p < .001).
