Factors Influencing Parental Competence in First-Time Postpartum Mothers

The purpose of this study was to determine the influences of age, antepartum depression, postpartum depression, desire for a child, and family functioning on parental competence in first-time postpartum mothers. Subjects were 100 mothers who have had a first-time postpartum mothers in family planning clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The research instruments used to collect data included personal data interview, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Thai Family Functioning Scale, and The Parenting Sense of Competence Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, and Multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that age, antepartum depression, postpartum depression, desire for a child, and family functioning could predict parental competence in first-time postpartum mothers by 35% (R2 = .350, p < .001). However, only family functioning could statistical significantly predict parental competence in first-time postpartum mothers (β = .469, p < .001). However, age, antepartum depression, postpartum depression, and desire for a child was predicted to parental competence with no statistical significance (p = .887, .198, .654 and .133 respectively).
