The Effect of A Life-Skill Training Program on The Depressive Symptoms of Senior High School Students

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research using a two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to examine the effects of a life-skills training program on the depression symptoms of senior high school students. The sample was 74 students had mild to moderate depression symptoms. The individuals were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups with 37 subjects in each group. The experimental group received the life-skills training program in an eight-week, once a week continually, and the control group received only the routine care. The research instruments consisted of the following: 1) a life-skills training program; 2) the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D Thai version); and 3) a life-skills assessment form, which were used to control the experiment. All of the instruments were validated for content validity by professionals. The reliability of the instruments according to Cronbach’s alpha coefficients was 0.81 and 0.85 respectively. The evaluation was conducted 2 times, before the program began and immediately after the program completion. The effect of the program was analyzed using a t-test. The results of the study were as follows. 1) The mean score for the symptoms of depression of the senior high school students after participating in the life-skills training program ( = 9.16, SD = 3.71) was statistically significantly lower than before participating in the life-skills training program ( = 22.46, SD = 1.88) (t = 19.65, p<.001). 2) The mean difference of depression symptoms scores of the experimental group between pre-test and post-test participating in the life-skills training program ( = 13.30) were higher than those of the control group received only the routine care. ( = .03) as statistically significantly (t = 19.50, p<.001).
