Compartment Syndrome among Orthopedic Patient: Nurse’ Roles in Assessment and Prevention
Keywords:
Compartment syndrome, Nursing, Assessment, PreventionAbstract
Compartment syndrome is one of major emergencies in orthopedic patients that is required to be immediately treated. Increased intramuscular pressure impedes local muscle blood flow and capillary flow thereby impairing neuromuscular function of tissues, causing tissue death, organ loss, nerve function impairment, disability, and even death in severe cases. Compartment syndrome directly and indirectly affects both patients and their family members. Nurse is part of a multidisciplinary team requiring knowledge and skills to assess the function of the nerves and blood vessels, conduct continuous monitoring and surveillance, prepare effective plan to management and prevent Compartment syndrome in order to reduce potential complications and losses.
