A Study of the Relationship between Selected Personal Factors, Professional Practice Environment, and Job Retention of Registered Nurses in Thailand

Abstract

This descriptive research aims to study the relationship between selected personal factors, professional practice environment, and job retention of registered nurses in Thailand. The 2,340 registered nurses were selected. The data were collected by used 3 questionnaires which involved 1) selected personal data questionnaire, 2) professional practice environment questionnaire, and 3) job retention of registered nurse questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaires NO. 2 and NO.3 determined by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were 0.98 and 0.89, respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample and results of the questionnaires. Pearson Product Moment Correlations and Chi-square were used to determine significant associations among the variables. A statistically significant, positive correlation was found between 5 selected personal factors (age, health status, nursing experience, job description, and salary), professional practice environment, and job retention of registered nurses. This study supports that policy makers and hospital administrators should address the selected personal factors and professional practice environment, in order to increase job retention of registered nurses.
