Abstract

     This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the diabetic retinopathy and associated factors among patients with diabetes mellitus at Bangsai Hospital, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The population in this study was 481 patients with diabetes who participated in diabetic retinopathy screening program by retinal photography during January to May 2013. It was found that 27.6% out of 481 patients were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy in which all is non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy was related to duration of diabetes (p-value=0.020). Nevertheless, diabetic retinopathy was found in patients who were diagnosed with diabetes within 1 year. The authors emphasize the necessity of increasing coverage of diabetic screening to timely diagnose of diabetes. Moreover, a good diabetes clinic management is a recommended to achieve well-controlled diabetes to prevent diabetes retinopathy.
