Abstract

Background: Nasal secretion is found among sick children of young age suffering from upper respiratory tract infection. Most of the patients are treated with oral medications together with nasal irrigation. The problem is that caregivers lack confidence and experience in nasal irrigation.

Therefore, promoting caregivers’ confidence in nasal irrigation for sick children with retained nasal secretion may foster caregivers’ confidence in the nasal irrigation of their children.

Objectives: To study the effect of a perceived self-efficacy promotion program on the caregivers’ skills in nasal irrigation for sick children with retained nasal secretion

Methods: A quasi-experimental research study was designed using one sample group.              The sample consisted of 35 caregivers of sick children suffering from nasal secretion who were outpatients at a Pediatric department. The research instrument was the program to promote perceived self-efficacy of the caregivers’ skills in nasal irrigation for sick children with retained nasal secretion, and general data records from caregivers and children in their care. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-tests.

Results: The results showed that caregivers’ skills improved significantly compared to before participation in the program, with a statistical level of .05.

Conclusions: Self-efficacy promotion programs should be used to encourage caregivers to be more confident and able to perform nasal irrigation on their own children.
