Effect of Diabetes Mindfulness-based Emotional Eating Awareness Training Program for Type 2 Diabetic Patients with Uncontrolled Glycemia (DM-BEEAT)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who have uncontrolled blood glucose levels often engage in emotional eating behaviors. Mindful eating may promote sustainable dietary behavior change and help improve glycemic control.
Objective: To examine the effects of a mindfulness-based emotional eating awareness training program among T2DM patients with uncontrolled glycemia (DM-BEEAT).
Methods: This quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest–posttest design with follow-up. Participants were 56 patients with T2DM who had uncontrolled blood glucose levels and exhibited emotional eating behaviors. They were equally allocated to an experimental group (n = 28) which received a 12-week DM-BEEAT program, while the control group (n = 28) received standard dietary advice. Data were collected at baseline, week 6, and week 12. Instruments included the Mindful Eating and the Emotional Eating Behavior Questionnaires, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.95 and 0.88, respectively. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were measured at baseline and week 12. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA.
Results: The experimental group who received the intervention showed increased mindful eating and decreased emotional eating at Weeks 6 and 12. In addition, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels at Week 12 were significantly lower than both pre-intervention levels and those of the control group (p<.05).
Conclusions: Nurses and other healthcare professionals in diabetes clinics can use this program to promote healthy eating behavior change, improve glycemic control, and support diabetes remission.
