Abstract

Background: Smoking is a common form of substance use among adolescents and affects both physical and mental health.

Objectives: To examine self-regulation, smoking avoidance behavior, factors predicting smoking avoidance behavior among junior high school students, and the smoke-free school policy.

Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed-methods design was conducted in two phases. In Phase 1, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven key informants selected through purposive sampling. In Phase 2, data were collected from 303 lower secondary school students using a questionnaire developed from the Phase 1 findings. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, whereas quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

Results: Factors facilitating smoking avoidance included refusal skills, alternative activities, support from families, schools, and communities, and smoke-free school policies. Of the participants, 73.3% demonstrated a high level of smoking avoidance behavior. Self-regulation had a significant low positive correlation with smoking avoidance behavior (r=.150, p<.01). Self-discipline, academic achievement, and stimulus control jointly predicted 12.3% of the variance in smoking avoidance behavior (R²=.123, Adjusted R²=.111). Self-discipline was the strongest predictor (β=.272, p<.001), followed by academic achievement (β=.237, p<.001) and stimulus control (β=−.176, p=.014).

Conclusion: Schools should promote students’ self-regulation alongside the implementation of smoke-free school policies to strengthen smoking avoidance behavior.
