Abstract

Background: Mental health problems among adolescents are increasing. Promoting mental health literacy is therefore essential for appropriate self-care.

Objectives: To examine the current situation, develop a model, and assess the feasibility of piloting a suicide prevention literacy model among university students.

Methods: This action research comprised three phases. First, suicide prevention literacy was assessed among 430 students using a questionnaire with established content validity and reliability. Second, the findings from Phase 1 were used to develop a model consisting of four learning plans. Third, the model’s feasibility was assessed through a focus group discussion. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.

Results: The students’ mean knowledge score was 10.95 out of 15, with 50.93% meeting the criterion. The mean awareness and attitude scores were 3.53 out of 5 and 5.30 out of 7, respectively, with 58.37% meeting the criterion in both domains. These findings indicated that some students required further development of suicide prevention literacy. Accordingly, a model based on the Literacy of Suicide Scale (LOSS) and participatory learning was developed. It comprised four learning plans covering characteristics and warning signs, causes and nature, risk factors, and prevention and treatment. Experts considered the model appropriate in terms of its content, procedures, activities, and duration.

Conclusion: The model, developed from the situational findings and a participatory process, received positive feedback from experts and relevant stakeholders regarding its content, procedures, and learning activities. It should be piloted among university students to evaluate its effectiveness.
