Abstract

Background: Fluid overload is a common and significant complication among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. Promoting appropriate self-management behaviors is therefore essential.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of a self-management program for preventing fluid overload in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted. The sample consisted of 30 patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis, selected by simple random sampling. Research instruments included a self-management program for fluid overload prevention, a demographic and clinical outcomes record form, a knowledge questionnaire, and a self-management behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test.

Results: After participation in the program, the mean scores of knowledge regarding ESRD and fluid overload prevention, as well as self-management behaviors, were significantly higher than before the intervention (p < .05). In addition, mean serum albumin levels significantly increased (p < .05), while mean pre-dialysis body weight significantly decreased (p < .05) compared to baseline.

Conclusion: The program improved knowledge, self-management behaviors, and clinical outcomes. However, long-term follow-up is recommended to assess the sustainability of these effects.
