Abstract

Background: Preparing nursing students before graduation is a crucial process that shapes their professional attitudes and future competency. Promoting professional commitment alongside systematic career planning and self-development is an effective approach to nurturing high-quality professional nurses.

Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of a program designed to enhance professional commitment on attitudes toward the nursing profession and readiness for professional nursing practice among fourth-year nursing students.

Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design. A total of 131 fourth-year nursing students from a nursing college in southern Thailand participated in the study. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Professional Attitude Scale, and the Nursing Practice Readiness Scale. The intervention program was implemented over a period of 10 weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, and differences between pretest and posttest scores were examined using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Results: Nursing students who participated in the program showed statistically significant improvements in their professional attitudes and readiness for professional practice, increasing from moderate to very high levels (Z=6.725 and 9.568, respectively; p<.001).

Conclusion: The developed program effectively enhanced nursing students’ professional attitudes and readiness for practice before graduation. It can be adapted as a guideline for designing readiness programs in nursing education institutions according to the appropriate context.
