Abstract

Background: Children with asthma are a high-risk group who may experience severe symptoms and complications following coronavirus infection. As these children largely depend on caregivers, preventing post-infection complications relies significantly on caregivers’ experiences.

Objective: This study aimed to explore caregivers’ experiences in preventing complications in children with asthma following coronavirus infection.

Methods: This qualitative study used purposive sampling to recruit 17 caregivers of children receiving care at a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using content analysis.

Results: The findings revealed four main themes regarding caregivers’ experiences in preventing post-coronavirus complications in children with asthma: (1) perception of the disease and its risks, (2) prevention of reinfection through environmental control, (3) continuity of asthma care from hospital to home, and (4) proactive management by caregivers when children develop respiratory infections to prevent complications.

Conclusion: This study provides insights into caregivers’ experiences in managing and preventing complications in children with asthma after coronavirus infection. The findings can serve as a foundation for developing effective strategies to enhance caregivers’ ability to prevent post-infection complications in children with asthma.
