Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis that has affected undergraduate students in many ways. This causes stress and lowers the resilience quotient. Cognitive behavioral theory group counseling is a method that helps turn negative automatic thoughts about situations into rational thoughts, so that it is possible to adapt and return to normality and live a happy life again.
Objective: The study aimed to 1) investigate the resilience quotient of undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 2) examine the effectiveness of group counseling program based on cognitive behavioral theory for the enhancement of undergraduate students’ resilience quotient.
Methods: This study was a Quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of undergraduate students in the faculty of education of Ramkhamhaeng university who were selected through purposive sampling. The subjects in the experiment included 16 students with a lower Resilience quotient. Eight students were allocated to the experimental group and eight students to the control group. The research instruments consisted of the resilience quotient scale and an 8-session group counseling program based on cognitive behavior therapy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and t-test.
Results: The findings were as follows: 1) the resilience quotient mean scores of the experimental group after the experiment and follow-up were significantly higher than that of the control group at a significance level of .05; 2) the resilience quotient mean score of the experimental group was significantly higher after the experiment than before the experiment at a significance level of .05; 3) the follow-up mean score of resilience quotient of the experimental group was significantly higher than before the experiment at a significance level of .05.
Conclusions: Cognitive behavioral theory group counseling helps undergraduate students who are facing COVID-19 to have higher resilience quotient scores.
