Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Older persons are in the age group when health deteriorates and more health problems occur. If the elderly have health literacy, it can help reduce health risk factors and improve their quality of life.
Objectives: This purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of socio-demographic characteristics and health literacy on the quality of life of older persons.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 400 older persons who were selected by multi-stage sampling. Data were collected by interview using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Correlations were determined using the Chi-square statistical method and binary logistic regression analysis.
Results: The results revealed that the elderly had overall health literacy at a high level (60.25) and their overall quality of life was at a good level (69.50). The significant predictors of good quality of life among the elderly included health literacy; decision-making (adjusted OR=2.37, 95% CI: 1.09-5.15, p<.05), self-management (adjusted OR=2.49, 95% CI: 1.13-5.52, p<.05), media Literacy (adjusted OR=4.91, 95% CI: 2.14-11.29, p<.001) and age (adjusted OR=3.39, 95% CI: 1.05-10.92, p<.05) were able to explain 58.40% of the variation in good quality of life among elderly with statistical significance at .05 level (Nagelkerke R2=.584, Predictive correction =84.80%, p<.05).
Conclusions: Health literacy, including decision-making, self-management, media literacy and age can predict the quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, the health literacy of the elderly should accelerate the development to the level that the elderly can make decisions, manage themselves and be media-literate to affect the quality of life of the elderly.
