The Effectiveness of a competency development program of caregivers for the care of dependent older adults, Muang District, Nong Bua Lamphu province

Abstract

Background: The number of dependent older adults is increasing. Therefore, a competency development program is crucial to maximize  caregiver’s knowledge, attitudes, and skills to promote quality of life in older adults.


Objective: The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a competency development program for caregivers in taking care of older adults with dependency, Muang District, Nong Bua Lamphu Province.


Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study. The participants included 93 caregivers who were selected using the purposive sampling method. Participants has their knowledge, attitudes, and skills assessed at baseline and one month after the program. Descriptive statistics were used and data were analyzed using dependent samples t-tests to compare the baseline scores and those of one month after the program.


Results: The Knowledge and skill of caregivers significantly improved after the implementation of the program (p=0.05). There were no significant differences between pre-post intervention for caregiver’s attitudes in older adults with dependency.


Conclusion: The competency development program can significantly improve the knowledge and skills of caregivers caring for older adults with dependency.
