Abstract

Background: Depression plays an important role in adolescent suicide, and manifests itself in various challenges such as academic difficulties, family problems, and relationship issues. These challenges can trigger negative automatic thoughts directed towards oneself, further intensifying the experience of depression.

Objectives: To explore the relationships between social support, negative automatic thoughts and depression among college students of allied health sciences in a Rajabhat University.

Methods: This  study was a descriptive study. The sample consisted of 325 college students of a university during  academic year 2022. The research instrument was the social support questionnaire, negative automatic thoughts questionnaire and depression Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient.

Results: The results showed that the mean score on social support level was at a high level (M=3.91, SD=0.86) and that of the negative automatic thoughts was at a low level (M=2.34, SD=0.40), followed by the depression was at a low level (M=1.66, SD=0.42). Social support and negative automatic thoughts correlated with depression with statistical significance (r=-.42, p<.001 และ r=.73, p<.001 respectively).
