Factors related to health literacy among patients with acute myocardial infarction receiving percutaneous coronary intervention
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) caused by thrombosis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The treatments for the disease are percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and thrombolytic agents. Promoting health literacy may decrease the recurring thrombosis of patients.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors related to health literacy in patients with acute myocardial infarction receiving percutaneous coronary intervention.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Central Chest Institute of Thailand. Stratified random sampling was used to enroll 79 patients who visited the PCI Clinic. The research questionnaires consisted of demographic data and health literacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic multiple regression.
Results: The results showed that the diagnosis period of AMI had an impact on the health literacy of patients with acute myocardial infarction receiving percutaneous coronary intervention at a significance level of .05. The patients diagnosed less than two years were likely to gain health literacy more than those diagnosed over two years at 2.85 times (OR adj=2.85, 95%CI: 1.10–7.38).
Conclusions: The diagnosis period of AMI has an impact on health literacy. Health literacy decreased when the patients were diagnosed over two years. Then, the patient should be promoted health literacy about receiving percutaneous coronary intervention.
