Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease is a major complication in diabetic patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a model to promote health literacy and health behaviors to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Objective: To develop a model to promote health literacy and health behaviors towards cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes and hypertension at health service network in Nonthaburi Province.

Methods: This research and development was divided into 3 phases: phase 1, studying health literacy and health behaviors; phase 2, developing a health literacy development model to promote health behaviors towards the prevention of cardiovascular disease in diabetes patients with hypertension; phase 3, studying the results of the development of the model. Samples were 80 patients with diabetes and hypertension treated at the health service network in Nonthaburi Province. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a knowledge questionnaire, a questionnaire on preventive behaviors for cardiovascular disease, and clinical outcome record form. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test.

Results: The mean scores of health literacy and health behaviors for prevention of cardiovascular disease after model development was significantly higher than before (p<.001). Clinical outcomes such as HbA1C, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) significantly decreased after using the model (p<.001).

Conclusions: The model for promoting health literacy and health behaviors on cardiovascular disease was used as a guideline for developing and changing health behaviors resulting in lower HbA1C, blood pressure, and BMI levels. Therefore, this model could be used to reduce complications and prevent cardiovascular disease from diabetes and hypertension.
