The effects of the local wisdom play toward on communication skills among autistic children

Abstract
Background: Autistic children have socially delayed children in which interpretation and behavior have deviated from normal children their age. Thus, most of them completely live in their private world and block themselves from the world outside.
Objectives: To study the effects of the local wisdom play toward on communication skills among Autistic children.
Methods: This research was quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The samples were 9 autistic children aged 4-10 years, selected by purposive sampling. The research instrument was the local wisdom play composed of 12 activities, 15 minutes each, for 3 weeks, 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and a communication ability assessment. Data were analyzed by the wilcoxon matched-pairs singed-ranks tests.
Results: Findings show that autistic children have improved communication skills in all aspects, including the ability to understand meaning in communication, use words to communicate, and innovator in communications.
Conclusion: This study support that local wisdom play significantly improve the communication skills among autistic children in all aspects; therefore, further study should be test the long term outcomes.
