The effect of health literacy program on weight control behaviors of primary school students in Phetchaburi province

Abstract

Background:  Overweight and obesity among school-aged children remains an urgent public health problem that needs to be addressed. A health literacy program is one method to help educate school-aged children on weight control behaviors.


Objectives: To evaluate the health literacy program in terms of weight control behaviors.


Methods: This was a quasi-experimental research study using atwo group pretest –posttest design. The samples involved 104 primary school students. They were divided into the 52-member experimental group and 52-member  control group. The research tools were a health literacy program and digital weight scale. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, health literacy questionnaire, weight control behaviors questionnaire and weighing records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a paired t-test and an independent t-test.


Results: The result revealed that experimental group had a significantly higher mean score in health literacy and weight control behaviors than before the experiment as well as the control group (p< .05). Moreover, the mean difference in body weight in the experimental group was lower than the control group (p< .05).


Conclusions: The health literacy program resulted in primary school students improving their health literacy and weight control behaviors.
