Effectiveness of psychoeducational using the SLA model toward on knowledge, stress, and quality of life among new schizophrenia cases

Abstract

Background: If the new case of patients with schizophrenia lack of treatments or inconsistent treatments can cause relapsing symptoms. Psychoeducation program is the therapeutic intervention that can prevent that adverse outcomes.


Objective: To study the effect of the psychoeducational using the SLA model toward on new schizophrenic patients.


Methods: This research was Quasi-Experimental with one-group pretest-posttest design. Samples were 50 new cases of patients with schizophrenia admitted to the outpatient department, Srithanya Hospital.  The research tools was the manual for psychoeducational program SLA in patients with schizophrenia outpatient. Questionnaires used for collated data composed of schizophrenia knowledge test, stress assessment form, and quality of life assessment form. Data were analyzed by descriptive and t-test and repeated one way ANOVA.


Results: After the program, mean cognitive scores for schizophrenia were statistically increased, mean score of stress were statistically decreased, and the mean scores of qualities of life were statistically increased at p< .05.


Conclusions: The results of the psychoeducational program gave schizophrenic patients more understanding of schizophrenia resulting in reduced stress and follow-up every visit. These leading to a better quality of life.
