Pre-ageing preparation of registered nurses in Payao Hospital

Abstract

Background: The aging society is a global phenomenon. The proportion of aging people is increasing in every country. Thailand has become an absolute aging society since 2022. A study of the preparation of pre-aging persons is necessary.


Objectives: To investigate the patterns of pre-aging preparation of health care providers.


Methods: A qualitative research method was conducted with registered nurses aged 45-59 years old. A semi-structure interview was used with 72 nurses and an in-depth interview technique was used with 19 nurses. The interview questions were assessed for content validity by specialists. Data triangulation and content analysis were used to summarize the findings.


Results: This research revealed the preparation differed by age in the following main themes and subthemes: 1) Pre-ageing period: 1.1) gave up hyperactivity, 1.2) focus on health, 1.3) becoming a tower of strength for the family, 1.4) money was their dependency, 1.5) family relationships,1.6) renovate the home for life in old age, 1.7) keep calm, 1.8) volunteer, 1.9) adjust to living together, and 1.10) preparing  for moving. 2) Retirement period: 2.1) anti-aging for the physical,  2.2) balance work and life, 2.3) handover of work to the new generation, 2.4) asset security, 2.5) being reliant to their offspring , 2.6) adjustment of physical and environmental living conditions, 2.7) creation of a new identity, 2.8) reunion with friends, 2.9) reliant offspring 2.10) hobbies.


Conclusion: Healthcare providers under 55 years old living alone could prepare as a free choice. Married persons focused on their children’s future. Both gave up devoting time to work but maintained family relationships, physical and mental health, and volunteer work. The findings from those over 55 years old included reducing workload, handover over work to the next generation, financial security, self-reliant, and created a new identity after retirement.
