Effectiveness of a digital intelligence promotion program on preventive behaviors toward cyberbullying and cyberbullying victimization among junior high school students in Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

Background: Most junior high school students have experiences of accessing digital media and using it in inappropriately. This behaviour has had effects on mental health and has resulted in suicide. The digital intelligence promotion program was used to improve preventive behaviors for cyber-bullying and cyber-bullying victimization..


Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of the digital intelligence promotion program on the prevention of cyberbullying and cyberbullying victimization among junior high school students in Nonthaburi province.


Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study. The subjects were junior high school students aged 13-15 years old in Nonthaburi province. They were divided into two groups: The experimental group (n=40) and the control group (n=38). The experimental group received the digital intelligence promotion program for 5 weeks, 50 minutes at a time. The control group acquired knowledge about how to prevent cyberbullying and cyberbullying victimization. The cyber-bullying and cyber-bullying victimization preventive behavior questionnaires were used to collectdata. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests and independent t-tests.


Results: The results showed that the experimental group had significantly better cyberbullying and cyberbullying victimization preventive behavior scores compared to the control group (p<.05).


Conclusions: The findings indicated that this program can improve cyberbullying and cyberbullying victimization prevention behaviours. Therefore, teachers and healthcare workers can apply the program activities as a guideline for junior high school students.
