Learning management to develop English reading skills and learning strategies of students in Central College Network 1, Praboromrajchanok Institute for Health Workforce Development

Abstract

English reading skills is an essential skills on learning in 21st Century. This research was aimed to study the situation of learning management to develop English reading skills and learning strategies of students in Central Colleges Network 1 under Praboromrajchanok Institute for Health Workforce Development. Sample were 440 2nd-year nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing Cholburi, Prapokklao Chantaburi, Nopparat Vajira, Bangkok, Changwat Nonthaburi, and Sirindthorn College of Public Health Cholburi. Proportional and simple random sampling methods were used.  Research instruments included bundle of questionnaires: demographic data, learning management to develop English reading skills, and English learning strategy. Content validity assessed by three experts was .89 and .95, accordingly. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, and standard deviation.


Results indicated that learning management to develop English reading skills was at very good level, the highest score was on the ability of instructor and teaching method (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x} =3.78, SD = .64,  gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.78, SD = .63, accordingly). The strategies used in learning English from the highest to the lowest were Memory strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.63, SD = .70), Affective strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.60, SD = .71), Compensatory strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.58, SD = .71), Social strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.49, SD = .75), Cognitive strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.41, SD = .78), and Metacognitive strategies (gif.latex?\fn_cm&space;\bar{x}=3.29, SD = .52).  Instructors should apply various English learning strategies. Students should practice using these strategies to improve their learning in English language.
