Abstract

This research and development aimed to: 1) develop a caregiver participation supervision program for chronic medication use among elderly people in community of Phetchabun province; 2) assess the suitability of the program; and 3) evaluate the program usage. This research was divided into 2 phases: phase 1, qualitative research for conducting and developing the program which key informants were purposively selected from 40 experts; and phase 2, quantitative study for assessing the suitability of the program which participants were purposively selected from 25 qualified persons, and evaluating the program usage which participants were 30 pairs of caregivers and older adults determined by G*Power Version 3.1.9.4 and selected by multi-stage random sampling. Research instruments consisted of interview guideline, questionnaire to assess the suitability of program, and drug intake questionnaire. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and t-test (Dependent). The research results found that:

1) the developed program consisted of: (1) program manual and documentation; (2) objectives; (3) principles; (4) five steps of the program covering: (4.1) relationship building; (4.2) educating; (4.3) clarifying improper drug taking behavior and negative drug effects; (4.4) reflection; and (4.5) role summary; (5) application; (6) evaluation; and (7) conditions for success.

        2) this program was suitable to use at the highest level (M=4.69, SD=0.25).

        3) the elderly had significant correction difference of taking drug behavior from before intervention (p=0.01)

The results of this study can be beneficial for using as guidelines for caring elderly people with chronic illnesses in the community by promoting family or caregiver to participate in encouraging right and proper drug taking habit of the elderly.
