Abstract

This participatory action research (PAR) aimed to develop a community participation–based model for promoting preventive health behaviors among populations at risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Songkhla Province, Thailand. The participants consisted of community leaders, village health volunteers, and community members identified as being at risk of NCDs, totaling 51 individuals. The study was conducted in three phases (1) assessment of community context and health situations using the PRECEDE model; (2) development of a health behavior modification program and capacity building of community health leaders through participatory processes; and (3) evaluation of the effectiveness of the program by comparing outcomes before and after program implementation within the same group of participants. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired statistical tests.

The (anticipated) results indicated that, after participation in the program, participants demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in self-efficacy, self-control, and self-care behaviors (p < .05). In addition, health outcomes—including body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, and fasting capillary blood glucose—showed improvements, with values decreasing or moving closer to recommended levels. These findings suggest that the community participation–based health behavior modification program is effective in reducing risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases. The developed model may serve as a practical framework for preventive health promotion and can be adapted for use in other communities with similar contextual characteristics.
