Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study insomnia and relationships between fatigue, depression and insomnia in end stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. The study sample consisted of 123 end stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis recruited by a purposive sampling.  The instruments consisted of the demographic data form, the Fatigue Severity Scale, the Insomnia Severity Index and the depression scale.  All instruments were tested for their content validity by 5 experts, and the content validity index was equal to .97, .94, and .97 respectively. Their reliability scores as calculated by Chronbach’s alpha coefficient were .97, .86 and .90, respectively. Descriptive statistics, and Pearson product moment correlation were used for statistical analysis.

The results revealed that insomnia of end stage renal disease patients was at “subthreshold insomnia” (Mean=12.13, SD=7.87). Fatigue and depression were significantly and positively correlated with insomnia (r=.494, p<.001 and r=.633, p<.001, respectively)
