Abstract

The objectives of this research were to compare bowel preparation behavior for colonoscopy in older persons between a group that received individual and family selfmanagement program and a group that received conventional care. The research was quasi-experimental. The sample of people were 60 years and older who were diagnosed with abnormal colorectal status at Out-Patient Department and needed bowel preparation for colonoscopy. They were recruited by purposive sampling divided into experimental and control groups of the total 44 people, 22 were in the experimental group and 22 were in the control group. The experimental group received individual and family self management program based on Ryan and Sawin’s concept and the control group received conventional care for 8 weeks. Both groups were matched with similar characteristics as gender, age and laxalative. Use the instrument used in the experimental group was the individual and family self-management program. The instrument for collected data was personal data questionnaire and a questionnaire measuring the behavior of bowel preparation for colonoscopy in older persons and family wish reliability of 0.72 .The instrument used for measuring knowledge of bowel preparation before colonoscopy had reliability of 0.70. The content validity of the instruments has been verified by 5 professtional experts. The data analysis used statistical mean, percentage, standard deviation and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results showed that: the bowel preparation behavior for colonoscopy in older people who received individual and family self-management program was significantly better than those who received conventational care (p<.05).
