Experiences of Caring for Patients with Advanced Cancer at Home of Family Caregivers

Abstract
Purpose: To study the experiences of caring for patients with advanced cancer at the home of family caregivers.
Design: The phenomenological research methodology was employed based on the concept of Heidegger.
Methods: The selected according to purposive sampling. The key informants were primary caregivers caring for patients diagnosed by a doctor who had advanced cancer. Data were collected using interview guidelines with in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed by using Van Manen (1990) ’s method and audio recording until saturated data with the 13 informants.
Results: The results of the research revealed two parts consisting of Part 1, the meaning of illness of advancer cancer was categorized into two main themes: 1) the Short life of the patient, 2) Expecting that the treatment may cure cancer, and Part 2, the experiences of caring for patients with advanced cancer at the home of family caregivers were categorized into three main themes: 1) Caring for increasing of happiness and reducing of agony 2) Getting the encouragements and supports 3) Learning and adjusting of caregiver by caring experiences
Conclusion: The findings serve as basic information for the healthcare team, which encourages the potential caring of family caregivers to have the ability to take care of the advanced cancer patient at home.
