The Effect of Family Psychoeducation Emphasizing Shared Care On Depressive Symptoms of Older Persons with Major Depressive Disorder In Community.

Abstract

Purpose: To compare the effect of family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program on depressive symptoms of older persons with major depressive disorder in community.


Designs: Quasi-experimental research


Method: The research sample consisted of fourteen older persons with major depressive disorder and their families, who met the inclusion criteria and received services at the out-patient department of the Ongkharak Hospital, Department of Psychiatry and Drug Dependence. They were matched-pair by age and depression score and then randomly assigned into experimental and control group with 20 families. The experimental group received Family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program while the control group received conventional care program. Research instrument were: 1) the Family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program 2) Beck depression inventory II.  3) Pre-test and post-test of knowledge of major depressive disorder 4) Relationship in family assessment. All the instruments were validated for content validity, Beck depression inventory II, Pre-test and post-test of knowledge of MDD and Relationship in family assessment. their CVI were .81 ,1 and 1 respectively. The Chronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability were .78, .86 and .85 respectively. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and T-test statistics.


Results: 1) The mean scores of depressions of older persons with major depressive                   disorder after received the family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program  were significantly lower than those before at the .05 level. 2). The mean scores of  depressions of older persons with major depressive disorder who received the family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program were significantly lower than older persons with major depressive disorder who received routine nursing care at the .05 level.


Conclusion: A Family psychoeducation emphasizing shared care program was effective in reducing depressive symptoms of older persons with major depressive disorder in community.
