Abstract

Purpose: To study the effect of Self-Management Program emphasizing on the Arm Swing Exercises on hemoglobin A1C level among diabetic retinopathy patients.
Designs: Quasi-experimental research
Method: The sample group was diabetic retinopathy patients who received treatment at Metta Pracharak Hospital Nakhon Pathom Province. Selection by purposive sampling according to the specified criteria, 44 people were divided into the experimental group and control group, 22 members in each group. The experimental group received Self- Management Program emphasizing on the Arm Swing Exercises while the control group received conventional care program. An experimental instrument was the Self-Management Program emphasizing on the Arm Swing Exercises. The instruments for data collecting were demographic questionnaire and HbA1c tester. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and T-test statistics (t-test). Results: 1) The posttest HbA1C of diabetic retinopathy patients in the experimental group ( = 8.30 ± 1.55) was significantly lower than that of the pretest phase ( = 9.14 ± 1.46; t=3.23, p< .05). 2) The difference of HbA1C between pretest and posttest phase of the experimental group( =0.84±1.21) was significantly higher than that of the control group ( = 0.13 ± 0.85; t= 2.24 , p < .05). Conclusion: A Self-Management Program Emphasizing On the Arm Swing Exercise was effective in reducing hemoglobin levels in diabetic retinopathy.
