The Effect of a Program for Enhancing Self-esteem in Practicing the Maternal Role on Postpartum Depression among Adolescent Mothers

Abstract

Abstract
Purpose: To study the effect of a program for enhancing self-esteem in practicing the maternal role on postpartum depression among adolescent mothers.
Design: Quasi-experimental research: Pretest and posttest design with a comparison group
Methods: The samples of 50 was 15-19 year old adolescent mothers who came to receive antenatal care and delivery at middle-level hospital in Chonburi. There were 25 people random assigned to the experimental group and 25 to control group The experimental group received the program for enhancing self-esteem in practicing the maternal role, with the control group received regular nursing care. Data were collected by 1) Personal information 2) Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) 3) Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale, 4) Maternal role questionnaires. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability of instrument number 2), 3) and 4) were .807, .870 and .949, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and t-test.
Findings: 1) The mean scores for postpartum depression of the experimental group after the program were lower than pretest with a statistical significance (p<.01). 2) The mean scores of for postpartum depression of the experimental group was lower than control group with a statistical significance (p<.01).
Conclusion: The program for enhancing self-esteem in practicing the maternal role could lower postpartum depression in adolescent mothers.
