Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: To describe self-care experiences in preventing fall recurrence among older persons.

Design: Qualitative research based on phenomenological approach of Martin Heidegger (1962)

Methods: The informants included 12 purposively selected older persons who had falls but no fall recurrence within one year from the last fall until meeting the researcher. Data were collected using in-depth interview and tape recording, and analyzed based on the methods proposed by Benner (1985).

Finding: Self-care experiences in preventing fall recurrence among older persons consisted of five themes, including 1) the causes of fall were carelessness or misfortune; 2) mixed feelings arising from the fall; 3) need to manage the fall immediately by assessing injury, and performing self-care before deciding to seek treatment; 4) need to be careful and mindful with every step; and 5) families can be involved in preventing.

Conclusion: The findings serve as basic information for health care professionals to promote awareness of self-care for preventing fall recurrence in older persons and their families, which will contribute to the development of sustainable self-care behaviors.
