THE DEVELOPMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL IMMUNITY FOR ACADEMIC RESILIENCE OF POLICE NURSE STUDENTS THROUGH INTEGRATIVE GROUP COUNSELING

The research design was an exploratory sequential mixed methods design. The purposes of this research were 1) to study psychological immunity for academic resilience of police nurse students, 2) to develop the integrative group counseling model for developing the psychological immunity for academic resilience of police nurse students, and 3) to evaluate of integrative group counseling model for developing the psychological immunity for academic resilience of police nurse students. The sample of the study included 2 groups. The first group of psychological immunity for academic resilience study consisted of 228 first-fourth year police nurse students. The second group of the study was purposively selected from the first group. This second group consisted of 16 first year police nurse students whose psychological immunity for academic resilience scores were lower than 25th percentile. They were then randomly assigned into two groups, classified as an experimental group and a control group. Each group consisted of eight police nurse students. The research instruments were 1) the psychological immunity for academic resilience scale with reliability of .88 and 2) the integrative group counseling model for developing of psychological immunity for academic resilience with IOC of 1.00.
The research results were as follows:
- The psychological immunity for academic resilience could be characterized into four factors; namely, self-efficacy, academic commitment, self-regulation and optimism, The total mean score and each dimension score of the psychological immunity for academic resilience of the 228 first-fourth year police nurse students were low.
- The integrative group counseling model for developing the psychological immunity for academic resilience of police nurse students was developed by applying concepts and techniques of Person-center group counseling, Reality group counseling, Cognitive Behavioral group counseling, Gestalt group counseling and Solution focused brief therapy. The model included 3 stages: the initial stage, the working stage and the final stage.
- The psychological immunity for academic resilience of the experimental group after the experiment and after the follow up were significantly higher than before the experiment at .05 level
- The psychological immunity for academic resilience of the experimental group after the experiment and after the follow up were higher than that of the control group at .01 level.
- Focus group report of the experimental group showed that the police nurse students were satisfied with the integrative group counseling model. They gained more knowledge in developing the psychological immunity for academic resilience. They could develop their academic self-efficacy, academic commitment, self-regulation, and optimism.
