Abstract

The objectives of this research were to 1) study depression prevention potential in the elderly, 2) compare depression prevention potential in the elderly, and 3) study the results of using the innovation. The sample for studying depression prevention potential consisted of 324 elderly individuals obtained by stratified random sampling. For studying the result of the depression prevention potential, 30 subjects were divided into 2 groups: an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 15 subjects. The experimental group received the innovation, while the control group received usual information. Data were collected by depression prevention potential questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, inferential statistics; t-test and one-way ANOVA.

The results were as follows: 1) The overall potential to prevent depression in the elderly was at a moderate level, with the thinking aspect being the highest. 2) The elderly with different ages, marital statuses, and educational levels showed significant differences in depression prevention potential. 3) After using this innovation, the experimental group had significantly higher depression prevention potential compared to the control group, with statistical significance at the .05 level.
