Abstract

Dementia poses a significant health challenge, primarily affecting the elderly and showing a continuous upward trend. As a chronic disease, dementia affects various aspects of the elderly population's life, encompassing physical, mental, behavioral, social, economic, and overall quality of life. Currently, although there is a cure for dementia, the majority of treatments follow a palliative approach, yielding limited results. The key to caregiving lies in preserving the abilities of the elderly. To impede the progression of dementia in the elderly, nurses should engage in care practices that focus on promotion, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, utilizing evidence-based approaches, which ensures that the elderly and their caregivers receive care tailored to their specific needs. The primary objective of this article is to enhance nurses' knowledge and understanding in caring for the elderly with dementia, with a focus on maintaining their ability to self-care, decelerating disease deterioration, and concurrently alleviating the caregiving burden in a sustainable manner.
