Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed 1) to compare elderly caring behavior among nursing students between the experimental group, which received an attitude-enhancing program, and the control group, which received standardized learning management, and 2) to compare elderly caring behavior among nursing students in the experimental group, before and after receiving the program and during the follow-up period. The sample comprised 56 police nursing students, randomly assigned with 28 students in each group. The enhancing attitude program towards the elderly was used for the experimental group, while a behavioral assessment of compassionate elderly care was used for data collection in both groups. The content validity index, determined by three experts, ranged from .67 to 1.00, and the Cronbach alpha coefficient was .92. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and Repeated Measure ANOVA.

The results of this study revealed that police nursing students, after receiving the program and during the follow-up period in the experimental group, had higher mean scores of elderly caring behavior than those in the control group at a significance level of .05.  Police nursing students in the experimental group also demonstrated statistically significant differences in mean scores of elderly caring behavior in each period at a significant level of .05., with the greatest increase observed during the follow-up period.

Therefore, the attitude-enhancing program towards the elderly can be further extended to develop caring behavior in nursing students. It may serve as a guideline for nurturing caring behavior among individuals responsible for elderly care or the care of chronically ill patients, such as caregivers in nursing homes or chronic disease care centers.
