Abstract

This article aims to present the causes, consequences, and prevention guidelines for flatulence resulting from cesarean sections to promote the good health of postpartum mothers. Flatulence is the most common complication observed after a cesarean section, leading to slow postpartum recovery—a factor contributing to prolonged hospitalization and increased healthcare expenses. Additionally, there are consequences for maternal roles in building postpartum bonding behavior. Through a review of literature and research, the causative factors of flatulence include
the pathophysiology of postpartum mothers after a cesarean section, the use of anesthetics, post-operative pain, and side effects of analgesics. Other contributing factors involve eating behaviors, excretion, and stress/anxiety. However, flatulence is preventable. Therefore, nurses should enhance their understanding of evidence-based flatulence prevention after cesarean sections, assisting postpartum mothers in maintaining healthy behaviors and introducing effective flatulence prevention strategies.
