Abstract

This predictive correlational research aimed to study the prevalence and factors affecting mild cognitive impairment in hospitalized elderly people with heart failure. The participants were 103 elderly people with heart failure who received medical services at Phrapokklao Hospital, Chanthaburi Province and had a discharge plan. The research instruments included the general information questionnaire and the Mini Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Mini MoCA) with specificity of 76.09% and sensitivity of 87.32%. Data were collected from October to December 2022. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, and multinomial logistic regression analysis.

The research results revealed that 1) 78.60% of elderly people with heart failure had mild cognitive impairment; 2) elderly people with heart failure with an increase of one year in age had a 1.261-fold increase in mild cognitive impairment (AOR = 1.261, 95% CI = 1.111–1.432, p < .001); and 3) elderly people with heart failure with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) less than or equal to 40% were 13.651 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment compared with elderly people with heart failure with a left ventricular ejection fraction greater than 40% (AOR = 13.651, 95% CI = 3.241–57.509, p < .001).

This research suggests that medical personnel should assess mild cognitive impairment among elderly people with heart failure and apply data for appropriate care of elderly people.
