Effect of the Problem-solving Therapy Program on Depression among Older Adults with Alcohol Dependence, Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province

This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of the problem-solving therapy program on depression among older adults with alcohol dependence. The participants consisted of 32 older adults with alcohol dependence who received treatment at the in-patient department, Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province and were equally divided into an experimental group (n = 16) and a control group (n = 16). The research instruments included the problem-solving therapy program, the demographic data form, the 9 screening questions (9Q) with reliability of .89, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) Thai version with reliability of .83, and the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol-Revised Version (CIWA-Ar) with reliability of .81. The implementation and data collection were conducted from December, 2019 to May, 2020. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, Fisher’s exact test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test.
The research results revealed that after the experiment, the experimental group had statistically significantly lower mean score of depression than that of before the experiment (Z = -3.525, p < .001) and that of the control group (Z = -3.225, p < .001).
This research suggests that psychiatric nurses should adopt this problem-solving therapy program to prevent or reduce depression among older adults with alcohol dependence.
