Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effect of noise management program by nurses on noise levels in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The samples were 14 registered nurses who provided daily nursing care in NICU of Somdech Phra Nangchao Sirikit Hospital. The research instruments consisted of the noise management program by nurses, the demographic data form, the observational form with reliability as 1, and the noise level recording form. The implementation and data collection were conducted from January to March, 2020. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.

The research results revealed that 1) after implementing the noise management program by nurses, the mean noise level of total daily nursing care was statistically significantly lower than that of before implementing the program (t = 9.263, p < .001); and 2) after implementing the noise management program by nurses, the mean noise levels of body wipe, vital signs measurement, suctioning, and nursing duty sending were statistically significantly lower than those of before implementing the program (t = 7.385, p < .001; t = 3.873, p < .01; t = 3.884, p < .01 and t = 2.320, p < .05, respectively).

This research suggests that nurses who provided daily nursing care in NICU should apply the noise management program by nurses for caring of preterm infants in order to prevent the potential disadvantages among preterm infants.
