Abstract

Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) is a newly emerging concept in professional education. The literature review related to EPAs found that three specific characteristics of EPAs were defined; 1) restrict to a limited number of tasks; 2) reflect the experience curve; and 3) include acceptance of responsibility and accountability. The concept of EPAs applied in nursing education is as follows: 1) provides a holistic and integrated assessment framework, 2) measures nursing practice in real time, 3) observes or assesses the students’ behavior on a day-to-day, 4) contributes in improving nursing quality and patient safety, 5) evaluates the outcomes, teaching and learning process, and 6) contributes in improving students’ autonomy in nursing practice without supervision. The EPAs applied in nursing education will eventually lead to anticipated consequences a mastery of core competencies and an increase in the level of autonomy.
