Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to investigate the effect of the problem solving therapy on relapsing risk behaviors among patients with amphetamine dependence. The participants consisted of 48 patients with amphetamine dependence who received treatment at the in-patient department, Suan Prung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai Province and were divided into the experimental group (n = 24) and the control group (n = 24). The research instruments included the problem solving therapy, the personal information questionnaire, the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) with reliability as .83, and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test–Amphetamine-type stimulants (ASSIST-ATS) with reliability as .82. The implementation and data collection were conducted from August, 2019 to March, 2020. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Mann-Whitney U test, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

The research results revealed that 1) after the experiment, the experimental group had statistically significantly lower mean score of relapsing risk behaviors than that of before the experiment (t = 8.200, p < .001); and 2) after the experiment, the mean scores of relapsing risk behaviors between the experimental and control group were not different.

This research suggests that psychiatric nurses should apply this problem solving therapy for caring patients with amphetamine dependence who receive treatment in the hospital in order to reduce relapsing risk behaviors among these patients.
