The Happiness in Studying as Perceived by Nursing Students

This explanatory sequential mixed methods design aimed to study the level of happiness in studying and the elements of happiness in studying as perceived by nursing students. The participants consisted of 2nd-year nursing students studying at Faculty of Nursing, Suratthani Rajabhat University in an academic year of 2018, who were arranged for quantitative research (n = 100) and qualitative research (n = 12). The research instruments were composed of the two-part happiness in studying measurement form, including the general data and the happiness in studying with the reliability of .80, and the focus group interview guide. Data were collected from March to June, 2019 and were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis.
The research results revealed that the nursing students had the overall mean score of happiness in studying at a high level (M = 3.88, SD = .32). The elements of happiness in studying as perceived by nursing students consisted of 6 issues, including 1) having the ability to study, 2) being in an environment conducive for learning, 3) having the ability to take care of the family, 4) having a steady profession after graduation, 5) being accepted by society, and 6) being proud and getting support from family.
This research suggests that nurse instructors should develop student-centered teaching methods in order to enhance better nursing skills and happiness in studying among nursing students.
