Effects of Promoting Contraceptive Implant Program on Knowledge and Use of Contraceptive Implants among Postpartum Adolescents

This quasi-experimental research aimed to determine effects of promoting contraceptive implant program on knowledge and use of contraceptive implants among postpartum adolescents. Participants consisted of 66 postpartum adolescents who recovered at postpartum ward, Prapokklao Hospital, Chanthaburi Province and were equally divided into an experimental group (n = 33) and a control group (n = 33). The research instruments included the promoting contraceptive implant program, the demographic questionnaire, the knowledge of contraceptive implant scale with the reliability of .73, and the use of contraceptive implant record form. The implementation and data collection were conducted from June to August, 2018. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Mann-Whitney U test, paired t-test, and independent t-test.
The research results revealed that after the experiment, the experimental group had statistically significant higher mean score of knowledge of contraceptive implant than that of before the experiment (t = 9.670, p < .001). The experimental group had statistically significant higher mean different score of knowledge of contraceptive implants than that of the control group (t = 5.540, p < .001). Additionally, the experimental group had statistically significant higher proportion of postpartum adolescents having contraceptive implant before discharging from hospital than that of the control group (χ2 = 4.980, p < .05).
This research suggests that health care providers should apply this program to care for pregnant or postpartum adolescents by giving knowledge of contraceptive implant as well as encouraging family to promote contraceptive implant use. This will help adolescents to have an effective contraception in order to prevent rapid repeat pregnancy.
