Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine the relationships among  knowledge of diabetes, attitude toward diabetes prevention, and care practice of the health care volunteers for persons with pre-diabetes. The participants were the 121 health care volunteers who registered at Namkleng District, Sisaket Province in 2014. The research instrument was a questionnaire that consisted of the demographic data, the knowledge of diabetes with reliability at .71, the attitude toward diabetes prevention with reliability at .72, and the care practice for persons with pre-diabetes with reliability at .93. Data were collected from January 23 to February 15, 2014. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, range, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s product moment correlation.

The research results revealed that the health care volunteers had the mean score of knowledge of diabetes, attitude toward diabetes prevention, and care practice for persons with pre-diabetes at a high level (X = 15.57, SD = 2.53, X = 51.08, SD = 8.27, and X = 57.60, SD = 15.30, respectively). In addition, the knowledge of diabetes was significantly positively correlated with attitude toward diabetes prevention (r = .358, < .001). However, there were no significant correlation between the knowledge of diabetes and the attitude toward diabetes prevention with the care practice for the persons with pre-diabetes.

This research suggested that nurses should continuously provide the diabetes education for the health care volunteers in order to promote their knowledge, attitude, and care practice for persons with pre-diabetes. In addition, the monitoring and supervision in health care volunteer’s practice, and the manual of practice in prevention and control diabetes for persons with pre-diabetes are needed.
