Abstract

This correlational research aimed to study health promoting behaviors and to examine the factors related to health promoting behaviors among people with mobility impairment. The samples consisted of 195 people with grade 3-5 mobility impairment in Bankhai District, Rayong Province. The research instruments were composed of a questionnaire of individual characteristics and experiences, a four-part questionnaire of perceived health promoting behaviors with the reliability in a range of .86-.93, and a questionnaire of health promoting behaviors with the reliability of .77. Data were collected from November to December, 2015. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, point biserial correlation, and Pearson’s product moment correlation.

The research results revealed that the overall mean score of health promoting behaviors was quite high. The mean scores of eating behavior, emotional management, and alcohol drinking were quite high, while those of exercise and smoking were quite low. Sex was statistically significant related to health promoting behaviors (rpb = .144, p < .05), health status, perceived benefits of action, perceived health promoting behavior self-efficacy, and social support for health promoting behavior were positively statistically significant related to health promoting behaviors (r = .260, p < .001; r = .263, p < .001; r = .478, p < .001 and r = .390, p < .001, respectively). Additionally, age and perceived barrier of action were negatively statistically significant related to health promoting behaviors (r = -.151, p < .05 and r = -.220, p < .01, respectively).

This research suggested that community nurse practitioners and involved agency should create activities to enhance health promoting behavior, perceived benefits of action, and to detect perceived barrier of action including to promote family involvement for people with mobility impairment well being.
