Abstract

Facebook addiction affects the psychological health of Z generation nursing students. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational research study was to examine Facebook addiction, depression and suicidal risk among Z generation nursing students. The participants were selected based on inclusion criteria and consisted of 383 Z generation nursing students during June - August 2018. The research tools were the Thai version of the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (Thai-BFAS), the Thai version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric structured Interview (M.I.N.I.) Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s product moment correlation were used to analyze the data.

Results of the study revealed the following: 19.84% of Z generation nursing students had Facebook addiction. Out of those who were addicted to Facebook, 40.79% had severe Facebook addiction and 16.19% had depression. Of those depressed 1.61% were severely depressed and 7.83% had suicidal risk. Of those with suicidal risk 10.00% had severe suicidal risk. Facebook addiction was positively correlated with depression (r=.213, p<.01), but was not correlated with depression or suicidal risk (r=.062, p>.01).

These research findings suggest that there should be screenings of Z generation nursing students for Facebook addiction, depression, and suicidal risk so psychiatric nurses can refer those with these problems for appropriate counseling and care.
